West End hospital stops admitting patients following Covid-19 death

HARARE’S private West End Hospital has stopped admitting patients with immediate effect following the death on Wednesday of a Covid-19 patient.
Ambuya Nguni, mother to former government minister Sylvester Nguni, died aged 82 at the upmarket medical facility, becoming the country’s fourth recorded Covid-19 death.
Her death at a hospital that has not been designated for handling Covid-19 patients has brought panic amid fears she could have infected medical staff and other workers at the health institution.
The casualty area has since been disinfected and contact tracing, including health workers who were assisting the patient, has since begun.
Patients currently admitted are now using upper floors.
Ambuya Nguni was from Mashonaland West’s rural Mhondoro, another source of worry for Zimbabwean authorities who have been concentrating their anti-pandemic efforts in the country’s crowded urban areas.
