Police ordered to stop beating up civilians during lockdown

By Staff Reporter

THE High Court has ordered the Zimbabwe Republic Police to stop beating up and subjecting civilians to inhumane treatment during their enforcement of a government imposed lockdown against the spread of coronavirus.

Read a tweet by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights Tuesday afternoon:

High Court has just granted an interim order that @PoliceZimbabwe, army & other enforcement officers must respect human rights, dignity & fundamental freedoms, in Masvondo & @ZLHRLawyers case.

The case challenges torture, inhuman & degrading conduct, disrespect of dignity & violation of Const by @PoliceZimbabwe & army who invaded Masvondo’s home, assaulted her & set dogs on her. It also challenges none compliance with social distancing by ZRP & others.
