Parks rangers feared dead after clash with poachers inside Lake Kariba

TWO Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority rangers have gone missing amid fears they could have died following a battle with suspected poachers in the middle Lake Kariba on New Year’s Eve.

The rangers are said to have been on patrol in the lake when they caught up with suspected Zambian poachers they immediately apprehended.

There are fears they may have been overpowered by the poachers who could have thrown them into the water.

Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident adding that investigations into the whereabouts of the pair were underway.

“I can confirm that our rangers that were on patrol in Lake Kariba are missing after being in contact with suspected poachers.

“The matter is still under investigations and we are working closely with our counterparts in Zambia,” he said.

There are reports that the rangers encountered the poachers and managed to effect an arrest before taking them to their Changa Camp for safekeeping of the poachers’ boat as an exhibit.

It is alleged that the poachers fought the rangers in the middle of the lake on their way to Kariba town and managed to overpower them.

The matter came to light when the rangers’ patrol boat was found floating on the lake.
