ACTING President Constantino Chiwenga Monday sent his condolences to the families of 16 Zimbabweans who perished Saturday in a horrific bus accident involving a haulage truck.
The General Bande Bus Company owned bus side-swiped with a haulage truck causing the fatalities.
The road disaster happened along the Mutare-Harare road, some 50 kilometres from Mutare.
“It is with a great sense of shock and sadness that I learnt of the death on Saturday evening of 16 people in a tragic accident involving a bus and a haulage truck along the Harare-Mutare highway. Life is very precious and losing it in circumstances that are avoidable is not only extremely painful and heartbreaking but also needless and senseless,” Chiwenga said in a statement.
In his message, Chiwenga urged drivers to observe caution on the country’s roads.
“This latest bus accident brings to the fore Government’s call to road-users including all those involved with public transportation to value life always and to be mindful of the heavy responsibilities they carry on their shoulders to ensure the safety of passengers,” said Chiwenga.
The bus accident comes just as the country emerged from a bloody festive period in which 91 lives were lost while 414 people were injured in road accidents during the period 15 December to 29 December 2019.
