MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa says government ministers and other public officials should donate part of their wages towards national programmes aimed at combating coronavirus in the country.
He was speaking Wednesday in an online address which focussed on the Covid-19 menace that has killed three Zimbabweans among 18 infected locals since outbreak last month.
Chamisa, whose party has parliamentary representation and also controls many local authorities, said MPs and councillors should take pay cuts in the face of the health catastrophe.
“Ministers, Members of Parliament and Councillors…take the lead especially, even in offering a salary cut, to show that we are serious about this,” he said.
“We cannot be just participating without being involved, when we are participating, we are giving something but when are involved we are giving our hope and that is leadership that is required.
“This is no time for politics. Life is precious to be a political game. We must preserve it. We must defeat this coronavirus. We will overcome it.”
