Bashed Jah Prayzah files police report, manager speaks

By Arts Reporter

POPULAR musician Jah Prayzah (pictured) has filed criminal charges against mourners who manhandled and pelted him when he had shown up at the funeral of his former bodyguard Crispen Nyemba at Glen Forest Memorial Park Tuesday.

Nyemba died in a car accident along Samora Machel Avenue in the early hours of Sunday.

Perhaps in a premeditated attack, mourners at Nyemba’s funeral temporarily suspended the ceremony and turned on the “Kutonga Kwaro” hit-maker in scenes never witnessed before.

The dreadlocked musician was seen being mobbed by mourners as he strode towards his car with objects being thrown at him.

Witnesses to the incident proffered varying accounts of the motive of the assault.

A Whatsapp message circulated on Tuesday linked the assault to politics following the musician’s hit, Kutonga Kwaro which seems to exalt under-fire Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mnangagwa’s name dominates the list of possible successors to President Robert Mugabe although the irritable Zimbabwean leader seems to have taken umbrage with his deputy’s unbridled ambition to get his job.

Another version says the mourners were accusing the successful musician of using foul means to end his late aide’s life so he could bolster his own success through supernatural means.

Others say the mourners were angered by Jah Prayzah’s failure to contribute anything towards Nyemba’s funeral coupled with his haughty appearance at the solemn ceremony with little regard to the prevailing mood.

Jah Prayzah’s manager Keen Mushapaidze confirmed the incident adding that they have since filed a police report on the matter.

“We had gone to pay our last respects when some mourners descended on us. We did not know that some mourners were aggrieved. We do not know whether it was because we did not contribute anything towards the funeral or it is because of how we severed ties with Crispen (Nyemba),” he said.

Appalled Zimbabweans on Tuesday took to social media to condemn the crooner’s assault.

The act is a sad episode to the brand of one of the most popular celebrities on the country’s musical scene.
