Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) secretary general and legislator Chalton Hwende has made sensational claims of a state plot to arrest and poison party leader Nelson Chamisa.
Hwende made the claims through social media where he also alleged some former party allies had been recruited into the sinister plot.
Chamisa, the country’s opposition leader with the most realistic chance to upstage incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has often come under criticism for perceived cowardice by some of his followers who accuse him of lacking the aggression shown by his lieutenants when confronting the state.
The opposition leader has divided opinion even among his most avid followers through his cautious opposition politics which have not gotten him into the trouble often experienced by his aides.
But in an apparent bid to defend him, Hwende let out the sensational claims, which explain his boss’s guarded brand of politics.
“Since the 2018 Election was stolen there has always been a plot to arrest @nelsonchamisa in order to poison him in Prison. During the motlanthe commission he was served by one local commissioner (name withheld) but I see many people insulting him here very often,” Hwende said.
“Very senior people in our party who later left the party had been recruited by the CIO to coach witnesses and blame the President for the August 1 shooting so that he can be arrested and poisoned in Prison. We were tipped and Exposed the plot and it was abandoned.”
Hwende added, “They even tried to link him with the sale of council stands arrested our Cllrs & again we exposed the plot thanks to vigilant security and intelligence personnel serving in the current administration. You remember also the Fake Rape Norton Case! All these plots have failed.
“The denial of Bail to the 13 Nyatsime Leaders is also meant to push the President to fall into the trap & plot and we should never allow that. We are pushing the regime to release these political prisoners. A lot of international lobby is going on to secure their release.”
Responding to Hwende’s claims some erstwhile party allies were hired into the plot, MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora challenged Hwende to name the culprits.
Mwonzora, a one-time Chamisa ally, has come under fire from CCC supporters for allegedly playing along to a perceived Zanu PF plot to decimate the country’s main opposition.
