Police have launched an investigation after Manchester United captain Harry Maguire received a bomb threat.
Cheshire police with sniffer dogs were sent to the England star’s mansion on Thursday afternoon, where he lives with his fiancee Fern Hawkins and their two daughters, to carry out urgent searches.
Police were originally called out to reports of a bomb threat on Wednesday but searches are reportedly still ongoing.
Maguire received the sinister threat via email, which claimed that a bomb would be planted in the defender’s home, according to The Sun.
A spokesman for Maguire said: ‘In the last 24 hours, Harry has received a serious threat to his family home.
‘He has reported this to the police who are now looking into the matter. The safety of his family and those around him is obviously Harry’s number one priority.
‘He will continue to prepare for this weekend’s fixture as normal and we will not be commenting in any further detail at this time.’
Concerns have been raised for the safety of the player and his family and they are said to be extremely shaken by the threat.
Cheshire Police released a statement saying: ‘On Wednesday 20 April Cheshire Police were called to reports of a bomb threat at an address in the Wilmslow area.
‘No evacuations took place, but as a precautionary measure a police explosives dog has attended the address this afternoon, Thursday 21 April, to conduct a search of the gardens and surrounding area.’
Ralf Rangnick’s side are set to play Arsenal in the Premier League at the Emirates at 12:30pm on Saturday and Maguire is expected to be part of the squad as they look to keep their top four hopes alive.
The chilling incident occurred just two days after United suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Liverpool.
The Red Devils are suffering through a spell of poor form, with just one win in their last five games coming against rock-bottom Norwich, and are have slipped to sixth in the Premier League.
Although the entire team played inexcusably in Tuesday’s Anfield shocker, the criticism of Maguire appeared to reach a peak after his woeful performances throughout the entirety of the season.
The centre back was caught badly out of position for Luis Diaz’s opener after just five minutes, which opened the floodgates for the Reds.
As captain, Maguire has received the brunt of the criticism this season and after this week’s defeat raging fans were scathing of the England international as they caused #MaguireOut to trend on Twitter.
Maguire and the rest of the United team regularly receive death threats on social media but this recent one is said to be taken very seriously.
