Thieves steal ‘gonyeti’ laden with 31 tonnes copper

Some cheeky thieves in Chegutu stole a haulage truck which was transporting 31,5 tonnes worth over US$300 000.

The incident, according to police, occurred on Friday.

Said the police via their official Twitter handle on Monday, “The ZRP is investigating a case of suspected carjacking which occurred in Chegutu on 15/04/22, where a Freightliner Truck with horse number ADC 2434 and trailer number HX45MBGP laden with 31,5 tonnes of copper from Zambia went missing.

“The horse was later found parked at 104 km peg along Harare- Bulawayo Road facing the Harare direction without the trailer. Police observed a shattered windscreen, tampered ignition and some scattered clothes in the truck. #notorobbery”.

The stolen copper is valued at US$323 820 based on the global market prices of the mineral which currently stand at US$10.28 per kilogramme.

The theft of a haulage truck, commonly known as gonyeti in street lingo, is rare in Zimbabwe.
