Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has cautioned local media for erroneously referring to some of its members caught in mischief or pure criminal acts as top cops when in fact, the title refers to the organisation’s high-ranking officers.
In a statement Wednesday, Nyathi said, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern recent media reports on alleged commission of misdemeanour or suspected criminal acts by some police officers.
“In some cases, the media has been awash with headlines titled ‘Top cop arrested, Senior police officer nabbed or police commander nailed.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to set the record straight that Senior officers in the Zimbabwe Republic Police are of the rank of Superintendent and above. Junior members are of the rank of Chief Inspector and below.
“We urge the media to verify the correct status of the members suspected to have committed a crime before publication or broadcast as most ranks being quoted are not correct.”
Nyathi said some police officers are cited as senior officers yet are not of that rank.
