Chamisa slams ‘barbaric’ savaging of staunch follower

Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has condemned the arrest and torture of staunch party supporter popularly known as Madzibaba VeShanduko by police after the activist had been found wearing the party’s yellow regalia.

Police accuse the opposition activist of disorderly conduct.

Godfrey Karembera – his real name – was seized by police in Harare’s CBD this Thursday and driven to Harare Central Police Station where the alleged abuses took place.

Images of a badly beaten Karembera later went viral on social media Thursday, inviting wide condemnation from ordinary Zimbabweans and rights groups that felt the act was unacceptable state brutality.

In a twit, Chamisa described the act as barbarism.

“State sanctioned violence against unarmed & peace loving citizens is criminal, sadistic, illegal and must be condemned not condoned. The perpetrators must be punished for this barbarism. This is what earns us a banana republic tag and tarnishes the image of our great country!” said the opposition leader.

The incident followers several attacks on opposition CCC supporters by alleged Zanu PF fanatics as the country’s election preparatory period becomes tense.

State President and Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has, in recent public comments, called for peace although violence persists seemingly unabated.

The violence has spotlighted on Mnangagwa’s apparent lack of commitment to arresting internecine politically motivated violence that has claimed hundreds of opposition supporters in past poll periods.
