US embassy mourns slain CCC activist

Zimstar News

The US embassy in Harare has expressed its regrets over the killing on Sunday of opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporter Mboneni Ncube in Kwekwe by alleged Zanu PF activists.

In a message posted on its Twitter handle Monday, the embassy also called for justice against perpetrators of politically motivated violence.

“Our thoughts are with the family of Mboneni Ncube, killed in Kwekwe this Sunday for exercising his rights – rights due to all citizens in a democracy.  We call for justice and broad support to end political violence in Zimbabwe. #VotesWithoutViolence,” said the embassy.

Ncube died when suspected Zanu PF activists indiscriminately attacked opposition supporters with machetes, iron bars and other dangerous weapons for their support for Nelson Chamisa’s party.

CCC poses the most realistic election threat against Zanu PF’s continued stranglehold on power.

In an earlier message, the US expressed solidarity with Zimbabweans who genuinely seek to exercise their freedoms as enshrined in the country’s laws.

“The United States stands with the people of Zimbabwe who seek to exercise their political rights and assemble peacefully. We call for broad support to end political violence. There is no room for political violence in a democracy. #VotesWithoutViolence,” said the embassy.

Through the comments, the US embassy joins other western embassies that have also condemned the violence.
