Blessing Chebundo, the famous two-time parliamentary election victor over the now President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has told a Zanu PF star rally presided over by the latter in Kwekwe that he is on a mission to convert more of his ex-opposition allies to join the ruling party.
Chebundo first defeated Mnangagwa in the 2000 parliamentary elections in Kwekwe Central and handed him another humiliating defeat in the same constituency in 2005.
In past comments, Chebundo has publicly boasted about the victories, which hounded the one-time Midlands strongman to an obscure Chirumhanzu-Zibagwe constituency which was created by then President Robert Mugabe 2007 to save his then right handman from more humiliating defeats.
Fast forward to 2022, Chebundo is now an avowed Mnangagwa disciple who has voiced his resolve to spread the Zanu PF gospel.
This follows his surprise defection to Zanu PF alongside a handful opposition politicians last year.
Speaking at Mnangagwa’s by-election campaign launch at Mbizo Stadium in Kwekwe this Saturday afternoon, Chebundo said God showed His mercy on him and some former MDC politicians by making them realise the wisdom of joining Zanu PF.
“We were accepted into the party led by Mnangagwa. With his magnanimity and together with the rest of the (Zanu PF) leadership, they welcomed us, and we then pledged and said we are going to champion the agenda of teaching those we left behind whose eyes are not yet open (to join Zanu PF),” he said.
Chebundo called his mission, “Operation Come Home” which he said was targeting “some of our people who need to be enlightened”.
The former opposition lawmaker said Zanu PF was the right party to “take Zimbabwe to the future”.
