Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) parliamentary candidate for Harare East, Tendai Biti has been released with no charge.
The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights confirmed the prominent politician’s release Monday after practitioners affiliated to the stable reacted to his arrest earlier during the day.
“Our rapid reaction system works effectively to limit & combat violation of HRDs rights&after the quick intervention of ours lawyers, @BitiTendai & his aide Emmanuel Zellers Gumbo has just been released with no charges preferred against them after being taken to 2 police stations,” ZLHR said in a twit Monday.
Biti was arrested while campaigning at Letombo area in Masasa in the constituency amid a cloud over reasons behind his arrest.
State media Monday claimed the former Finance Minister was never arrested in the first place but was only taken for questioning over a misunderstanding with police.
But the claims were quickly rubbished by CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere who argued the denial of freedom was in itself an arrest on the politician.
“Fadzayi Mahere🇿🇼@advocatemahere·7mStop lying! Hon @BitiTendai was arrested and detained at Harare Central Police Station then moved to Rhodesville Police Station where no charges were preferred against him. Why did those 3 police officers deprive him of his liberty & arrest him without charge? Shameful lot!” Mahere said.
According to journalists employed there, state media operates under tough instructions by Zanu PF aligned authorities on what to publish.
