Controversial Sungura musician Hosiah Chipanga has successfully filed at the nomination court to contest the Dangamvura-Chikanga parliamentary seat in one of the many by-elections set for March 26 this year.

The Kwachu-kwachu chanter would be up against former MPs in Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC)’s Prosper Mutseyami and Zanu PF’s Esau Mupfumi.

Mutseyami, elected on an MDC Alliance ticket 2018, is seeking a return to complete his term in parliament following his recall last year by the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T.

Among some of the candidates Chipanga is set to contest is Taurai Mudzipurwa of Douglas Mwonzora’s MDC Alliance and Zaranyika Anesu (Maat Zimbabwe).

The musician, known for his satirical lyrics bordering on social commentary, is contesting under his Patriotic Zimbabwean Party.

It is not the first time the protest musician and dancer has contented for parliament.

He contested and lost in 2018.

When he filed for nomination in 2018, Chipanga was oozing with confidence he was winning the poll.

“My phone is inundated with calls from all corners of the country, not just in Mutare. People in Mutare are so excited about my decision to join politics and they have assured me that I will win smart,” he told the media then.

“I wish I could have contested the presidential seat and I am convinced handaizoshaya wanguwo wekurova ipapo, (I could outshine some presidential candidates).”

Chipanga would not be the first musician who has put up a bid to abandon the performance stage for parliament’s chambers.

Musicians Energy Mutodi, Elias Musakwa, Betty Kaseke, Fortune Chasi and Joshua Sacco are among others.
