Zimbabwe are all but out of the 2021 AFCON competition even with a game to spare after losing 1-2 to neighbours Malawi in a bruising Group B encounter played in Bafoussam, Cameroon this Friday evening.
The Warriors, who had a promising start to the encounter with some sleek passing football, were first to score through Ishmael Wadi’s header after 38 minutes but their lead was quickly cancelled by The Flames’ Gabadinho Mhango after 43 minutes.
Mhango came back again after 58 minutes to haunt the Warriors after robbing defender Teenage Hadebe of a harmless looking ball to score Malawi’s second.
The result means the Warriors cannot either win the group or finish as runners up evening if they win their last encounter against Guinea on Monday.
The Warriors can still hope for a back door entry to the second round of the competition if they become best placed third side but have to beat Guinea by a wide margin.
Guinea and Senegal are joint leaders of the Group with 4 points apiece.
Both sides played out to a goalless draw earlier in the day.
