MDC-T official and Gweru businessman Hamutendi Kombayi has bounced back as mayor of the Midlands provincial capital after winning a chamber election held among fellow councillors Tuesday.
Kombayi polled 11 votes against Martin Chivhoko’s 4.
The post fell vacant following the December 10, 2021 recall of Josiah Makombe by the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T faction which accused him of pledging loyalty to the rival Nelson Chamisa led MDC Alliance.
In a twit Tuesday, MDC-T congratulated Kombayi for his victory.
”Congratulations to our Gweru Ward 1 Councillor Hamutendi Kombayi who has just been elected Gweru Mayor. He trounced Councillor Martin Chivhoko of Ward 4 by 11-4 votes. The vacancy fell after the recall of Josiah Makombe Copyright signMDC-T2022,” said the party.
Hamutendi is son to late prominent politician and Gweru’s first ever black mayor Patrick Kombayi.
