Harare City Council teams have descended on Mbare to destroy hundreds of illegally constructed vending stalls mostly concentrated near the cemetery area.
Police Saturday morning sealed off all roads leading to Mbare to conduct the operation.
The order to raze down the stalls was reportedly issued by Tafadzwa Muguti, secretary for provincial affairs in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC).
MDC Alliance slammed the decision which it described as callous.
“Central Govt through Tafadzwa Muguti is destroying vending stalls & market spaces in Mbare.
“The callous, violent, corrupt regime of @edmnangagwa is anti-people & refuses to follow due process when carrying out these illegal acts. We must vote them out in 2023!” said MDC Alliance on Twitter Saturday.
It is not the first time in months that the stalls have been put down by authorities.
In June last year, council teams also accompanied by police moved in to destroy the markets at the popular Mupedzanhamo Flea Market area where hundreds of informal traders operate from selling mostly second-hand clothes smuggled from Mozambique.
The operation also affected the adjacent Magaba Home Industry.
