Sirizani Butau, who turned instant hero when he sacrificed his life to pull some eight passengers out of a burning bus moments after a deadly crash with a fuel tanker a week ago, has been rewarded with a full year’s supply of cooking oil by Zimgold.

The company announced the award for the Kadoma based truck driver on Thursday.

“Sirizani Butau, is our first 2021-2022 Community Hero winning a Year’s supply of #Zimgold Cooking Oil.

“Sirizani risked his life helping people from a devastating accident along the Harare-Mutare Highway on Christmas Eve. His heroic action deserves to be awarded,” the company posted on Twitter.

The award comes after President Emmerson Mnangagwa also promised to honour Butau, who sustained burns during his heroic act.

The Yotong bus, owned by Beta Buses, crashed with the Freightliner fuel tanker on Christmas eve at the 242 km peg along Harare-Mutare road.

Five died from the horror scene.

They included three passengers on the bus, the tanker driver and his passenger.

The rest of the passengers kicked emergency exit panels and helped others to escape before the loaded tanker burst into flames which also engulfed the bus.
