A gang of robbers Tuesday disarmed security guards at Tongogara Refugee camp and made off with US$60 360 cash from a safe.
The incident was reported by police via its official Twitter handle Thursday.
“The ZRP is investigating circumstances surrounding an armed robbery case which occurred on 28/12/21 at Tongogara Refugee Camp, Chipinge,” said the police.
“The suspects went on to disarm the security guards of their Norinco pistol with a magazine of 8 rounds and a 303 rifle with a magazine of 8 rounds. The suspects then opened the safe and stole two trunk boxes loaded with USD60 360 cash.”
Police appealed for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact any nearest station.
Armed robbery cases are on the increase in the country as both businesses and homes are being raided with large amounts of cash seized in the process.
This week, a 10-month-old baby was shot dead by some armed robbers who had raided a Macheke home resulting in a shooting incident with the homeowner.
The baby was shot dead while its mother was hospitalised after she was shot on the chest.
