Zimbabwe’s biggest names lost in 2021

The year 2021, just like in many years gone by, has robbed the country of some of its most prominent sons and daughters in fields such as politics, arts, sports, among others, with names such as Minister Joel Biggie Matiza, musician Soul Jah Love and businessman Douglas Munatsi quick to pop up.

Politics

Politics registered a lot of deaths through many causes, among them Covid-19.

Serving and former cabinet ministers who died this year include Sibusiso Moyo (Foreign Affairs), Joel Biggie Matiza (Transport), Simon Khaya Moyo (former Energy), Ellen Gwaradzimba (Manicaland Provincial Affairs) and Aeneas Chigwedere (former education).

HORIZONTAL

Former PF Zapu top politician and war veteran Jane Ngwenya also died August aged 86.

MDC-Alliance senator for Buhera South Christine Java nee Rambanepasi, mother to socialite Passion Java, died early this year.

Other big names are those associated with the country’s security forces and they include Zimbabwe National Army commander Lieutenant-General Edzai Chimonyo, Retired Major-General Paradzai Zimondi (former Prisons boss) and Retired Major-General Douglas Nyikayaramba.

Arts

Death has not been forgiving either to the country’s arts industry with Zimdancehall pioneering sensation Soul Jah Love and former Studio 263 actress Anne Nhira dying this year.

RMG Independent End Time Message Church of Zimbabwe, Robert Martin Gumbura, who came close to being a celebrity cleric after his much-publicised rape trial, also died in prison in July.

Sports

The sports fraternity also registered its own losses with former Dynamos football greats George Shaya, David Mandigora and legendary Caps United coach Steve Kwashi dying.

Former Caps United star Joe Mugabe also died in his UK base and was buried in Zimbabwe.

Equally, former Zimbabwe Cricket chief executive Dave Ellman-Brown died early this year.

Veteran football administrator Ndumiso Gumede is the latest big name to be lost within the sporting field while his former Highlanders colleague in ex-manager Ernest ‘Maphepha’ Sibanda died August after a week in hospital.

Business

The world of business has also not been spared as renowned banker Douglas Munatsi also died from a home fire incident last month while ‘Sis Bee Kitchen’ chain of restaurants owner and multi-award winner, Beauty Mpofu, died in her Bulawayo base lately.

Civil society

No doubt one of the biggest names within the country’s civil society, fierce human rights defender Dewa Mavhinga died of an undisclosed ailment early this month.
