A 10-month-old baby was shot and killed in a fierce exchange of gunfire between her father and some robbers who had stormed the family home in Macheke in the early hours of Tuesday.

The girl’s mother is also battling for life in hospital after she was also shot on her breast.

Police said Tuesday that they have since arrested three suspects in connection with the crime.

“The ZRP has arrested Ranganai Machipisa (36), Pearson Machipisa (23) and Gift Nhema (32) in connection with a murder case which occurred at Springfield, Macheke on 28/12/21 at about 0130 hours,” police said via their official Twitter handle.

“The trio who were armed with unidentified firearms attacked a family in a foiled robbery incident resulting in a shootout with the complainant.

“The complainant’s daughter (10 months) was shot on the chest and died on the spot while the wife was shot on the breast and is currently admitted at a local hospital.

“Police recovered a Star CZ pistol from the suspects and a Toyota Fortuner vehicle stolen through means of robbery in Murewa. #notomurderandrobbery.”

Armed robberies are now on the increase with renegade elements within the country’s armed forces among culprits.

Recently, Harare lawyer Joseph Nemaisa summoned his experience as a former member of a police CID crack team against armed robbers to gun down three suspects who had stormed his Harare home and held his family hostage.
