Three people were knocked down by cars – with two dying – in three separate hit-and-run incidents which happened in Bulawayo on Christmas and Boxing Days.

Police said via their official Twitter handles that “on 25/12/21, a male adult (NFPK) was hit by an unknown motorist while trying to cross Khami Rd near Trek service station, Bulawayo.”

The motorist, police added, did not stop after the accident and the victim sustained serious injuries and was referred to Mpilo Hospital.

“On the same date, a 53-year-old woman was fatally hit by an unknown motorist along Khami Rd, Bulawayo.

“The motorist did not stop after the accident,” police said.

“In another case of suspected hit and run RTA, the body of a 21-year-old man was found lying on the roadside with head injuries, along L. Takawira Avenue between Heyman and Park Rd, Bulawayo on 26/12/21. #notohitandrunaccidents.”

Added police, “The ZRP reiterates that motorists involved in road traffic accidents must stop, render assistance where necessary and report to the police within 24 hours.”

Road traffic accidents, often influenced by driving while drunk, are common especially during the festive period.

A bus horrific bus collision with a fuel tanker on Christmas eve outside Mutare leading to the death of five was also linked to the bus driver encroaching onto the lane for oncoming traffic while trying to avoid running over some drunk pedestrians.
