Dozens of passengers who were aboard a Beta bus are feared dead following a horrific head-on collision with a fuel tanker outside Mutare this Friday afternoon.
Unconfirmed reports say the fuel tanker burst into flames in an inferno that also engulfed the loaded bus, burning passengers in the process.
Images of the burning bus and tanker are circulating on social media.
A WhatsApp voice message by unidentified witness to the tragic incident said the bus driver suddenly encroached onto the lane of the oncoming tanker while trying to avoid a drunk pedestrian.
“The driver of the Beta bus tried to avoid a drunkard and encroached onto the lane of the oncoming fuel tanker.
“As we are speaking, passengers are being burnt inside the bus.
“It was a preventative accident. This is very bad. The driver of the bus put people in a tragic situation,” said the male witness.
The accident comes some 24 hours after another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on Thursday afternoon along Masvingo-Beitbridge highway at 235 km peg in which one person died while eight others were injured.
A Marcopolo bus with 29 passengers on board which was travelling to Masvingo veered off the road and overturned before landing on its roof after the left front tyre burst.
The dead accident victim was identified as Takawira Chitendere (49) who died on the spot.
His body was taken to Beitbridge District Hospital for post-mortem while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.
