Who says Christmas is for only those outside prison walls!
If you are among those sharing the thought, well, it is time to think again as the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service has released 50 prisoners who are serving time at Connemara to go and enjoy the world’s most celebrated holiday in the comfort of their homes and be back after five days.
According to ZPCS, those who have benefited from the gesture include 39 male and 11 female prisoners.
“ZPCS released 39 male and 11 female inmates who are going to enjoy festive season at their homes. These were released from Connemara Open Prison and Marondera Female Open Prison and they will report back to prison on 28 December 2021. This facilitates family reunion,” ZPCS said via its Twitter handle Thursday.

According to the ZPCS website, the open prison system was introduced “to try and complement the non-custodial options”.
The system seeks “to move prisoners from the closed prisons”.
Open prison facility was established at Connemara for male inmates and more recently, in Marondera for female inmates.
In the Open Prison System, the emphasis is on rehabilitation, counseling and re-integration, according to ZPCS.
Prisoners who benefit from the Open Prison System are selected by a well-constituted Selection Board and enjoy additional privileges, which are not enjoyed by those at closed prisons such as; free movement, late lock-up, television viewing, access to telephone, less supervision during work and they are also allowed to visit their families if they apply and authority granted, as well as the opportunity to attend lessons at colleges within the vicinity of the open prison.
