Five Premier Soccer League matches were abandoned this Tuesday afternoon when referees abruptly withdrew their services moments before kick-off following the shock suspension of the entire ZIFA board by the Sports and Recreation Commission earlier on for allegedly misrunning the affairs of the popular sport.

The teams were set to battle out in Match Day 2 of the 2021-22 football season in various venues of the country.

The abandoned fixtures are Craneborne Bullets Vs Bulawayo Chiefs (Sakubva Stadium), Highlanders Vs Ngezi Platinum (Barbourfields), Triangle United Vs Dynamos (Gibbo Stadium), Yadah Vs Kariba (Baobab Stadium) as well as Herentals Vs Black Rhinos (National Sports Stadium).

In a statement Tuesday, PSL said this has been necessitated by the non-appearance of match officials at all the match venues.

Some of the match officials had travelled from various parts of the country and had logged in for team inspections only to withdraw their services before commencements of team warm-ups.

“The PSL is concerned about the lack of communication from ZIFA Referees Committee as we tried to engage on the matter to no avail.

“We however hope a solution will be reached soon. We will update on any other developments,” PSL said.

PSL referees are officially employed by ZIFA.

It could not be established if this was a deliberate action agreed among the officials themselves or it was an instruction from the under-fire Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA executive.

The SRC dropped a bombshell Tuesday through suspension of the ZIFA board over a slew of accusations, among them, ‘gross incompetence”, “mismanagement and lack of accountability in the use of public funds”.
