Talent Chingwaru, the much trending Harare school teacher caught on video last week violently assaulting a student, has been spared jail nightmare following his conviction Saturday and subsequent sentencing by Harare magistrate Judith Taruvinga Monday.
Chingwaru (29) will however perform 630 hours of community service at Parirenyatwa Hospital, in Harare beginning this Tuesday.
When he appeared in court, he blamed his violent conduct to a toothache which he said caused him emotional stress.
Taruvinga set aside 18 months for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The Harare Einstein Tuition Centre teacher was filmed whipping the 18-year-old Lower six student with his trousers belt, headbutting and punching him.
The abuse has been seen as vindicating government’s controversial ban on corporal punishment.
