Talent Chingwaru, a Maths teacher at a Harare school filmed last week bashing a lower six student, has blamed his violent behaviour on a toothache he claims caused him some emotional stress.
Chingwaru, a teacher at Harare Einstein Tuition Centre, was filmed last week whipping with his trousers belt, headbutting and punching a male student at his school.
The video went viral on social media has reignited debate on corporal punishment in the country.
The teacher was incensed by the student who was caught watching a movie during lessons.
Chingwaru has since been convicted on his own plea of guilty after appearing Saturday at the Harare magistrates’ court where he appealed for a lighter sentence.
He told magistrate Judith Taruvinga he committed the abuse on the student while experiencing a toothache that caused him stress.
He is set for sentencing this Monday.
Prosecutors said they were still waiting for a medical affidavit to ascertain the degree of injury suffered by the student.
