Closed sections of Samora Machel Avenue in the Harare CBD finally reopened for traffic this Monday, following months of closure as construction work on First Chimurenga icon Mbuya Nehanda’s statue at the busy road’s intersection with Julius Nyerere was taking place.
The closed stretch along the road was between Leopold Takawira and Sam Nujoma Street.
When construction work was still taking place, motorists were forced onto other roads either inside the Harare CBD or on the immediate outskirts, causing a lot of congestion in the process.
Nehanda’s statue was officially unveiled 25 May this year by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to coincide with African Day commemorations.
The road however remained closed as work still continued.
