Mwonzora prunes Chamisa’s councillors in Harare to just 5

Nelson Chamisa and his MDC Alliance have seen the number of Harare councillors elected 2018 on a party ticket and still claim loyalty to the embattled opposition leader whittled down to just five following continued recalls by Douglas Mwonzora’s MDC-T.

This was revealed by MDC Alliance secretary general Chalton Hwende following reports the main opposition’s councillors who have kept their positions through switching allegiance to Mwonzora have resolved to support First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s projects in what would see President Emerson Mnangagwa’s wife forge partnerships with the country’s biggest local authority.

Hwende exclaimed via Twitter that his party’s representation in Harare has been decimated.

“All these Cllrs who have defected to Zanupf must never be voted again for betraying the will of the people of Harare. We are now left with only 5 Cllrs in Harare out of the 45 that were elected. Over 20 illegally recalled. Next week we will be naming and shaming these sellouts,” he said.

The MDC split was re-ignited 2018 by a leadership wrangle that first pitted former party deputy presidents Thokozani Khupe and Nelson Chamisa.

Mwonzora became main protagonist when he defeated Khupe and other challengers who sought the MDC-T leadership position at a party congress December last year.
