Zimbabwe coach Zdravko Logarusic has played down suggestions that Bafana Bafana will be favourites when the two nations meet on Friday.

South Africa and Zimbabwe are set to get their respective 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns underway on Friday afternoon when the two countries go head-to-head at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

Bafana Bafana are ranked 35 places higher than their neighbours in the FIFA world rankings but Warriors coach Logarusic believes his side will be able to match Hugo Broos’ charges when they take to the pitch.

“Their record in the competition suggests they’re the favourites but the reality on the pitch is entirely different,” he told “It’s up for grabs and either side can win. That’s what we’ll be fighting to do.”

Zimbabwe will also have to compete with Ghana and Ethiopia in qualifying Group G and Logarusic believes his side has just as good a chance as their rivals of qualifying for next year’s showpiece tournament.

“There’s very little between the teams and there’s no clear favourite,” he adds. “If you look at their records, Ghana and South Africa are the teams to beat, but that doesn’t mean anything out on the pitch because anyone can win.

“I think Zimbabwe have just as much chance as the others because we’re all evenly matched. Anything can happen in 90 minutes.”
