Government has been forced to issue an apology to a visiting Kenyan tourist who claimed being subjected to an embarrassing bribe soliciting incident by corrupt Immigration officials as she sought to enter Zimbabwe through the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport Tuesday.

Following her ordeal, the Kenyan national took to Twitter under the handle@kenyansista to share her horror in the hands of Zimbabwean authorities in a video that went viral on social media.

In a statement Tuesday, the ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage said it has “has taken note of a viral video on social video” adding that investigations into the incident were underway.

Said the ministry, “Immigration officials are alleged to have attempted to extort money from the visiting foreign national.

“The alleged bribery attempts by Immigration officials are not only deplorable but out of sync with the expected ethical conduct by staff manning our Ports of Entry and Exit.

“The alleged unprofessional and criminal conduct by Immigration officials does not reflect our attitudes and decorum as a nation towards our visitors. Traditionally, Zimbabweans are renowned for their hospitality and friendliness to visitors.”

The ministry said it is investigating the matter.

“We take this opportunity to advise the nation that investigations are currently underway to ascertain the facts and anyone caught on the wrong side of the law will be dealt with accordingly. The nation will be kept abreast of developments.

“We sincerely apologise for the ordeal that our fellow sister was subjected to. We also take the opportunity to reaffirm our Zero Tolerance on corruption,” said the ministry.
