Welshman Ncube’s MDC has expelled three of its senior officials for failure to submit themselves before a party disciplinary committee which had summoned them for hearing on charges of associating with the rival Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T.
The three are Shupikai Mandaza (Deputy national chairperson), Christopher Monera (Secretary for policy) and Munhango Musevenzo.
In a letter seen by Zimstar News and addressed to Monera, MDC National Disciplinary Committee chair Faroah Jele advised the politician he had been expelled.
“This is to advise you that The National Disciplinary Committee met as scheduled on 20 August 2021 in your absence to consider the charges leveled against you as set out in my letter summoning you to appear before the disciplinary committee and found you guilty of all the charges and further resolved to expel you from the party with immediate effect.
“Accordingly, please be informed that your membership of the party has been terminated with effect from mid-day 20 August 2021. You are advised to hand over whatever property or material including party regalia that maybe in your possession to the office of the secretary general.”
The officials had refused to submit themselves before the committee arguing that the MDC leadership that comprises Ncube and his deputy Edwin Mushoriwa had taken a decision to join the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa 2017 without the approval of the general party membership.
For that, they argued, Ncube and his lieutenants had “expelled themselves” from the party.
They also argued the disciplinary committee chaired by Jele had no basis according to the MDC constitution to try them for any alleged misdemeanours as it was now part of a different political association – MDC Alliance.
