Ncube poser as ‘suspended’ MDC ex-allies dig in

By Nkosana Dlamini

Battle lines are drawn between MDC Alliance co-vice president Welshman Ncube and a group of officials from his former MDC who have adamantly dismissed their recent suspension as a nullity.

Ncube’s MDC in 2018 merged with the MDC-T and Tendai Biti’s PDP in a coalition arrangement originally spearheaded by the now late Morgan Tsvangirai, to form what is now known as MDC Alliance.

MDC Green, as it is commonly referred to, sprang a surprise this past week when it reconvened to hand suspensions against four party officials accused of links with the rival MDC-T faction led by Douglas Mwonzora.

The officials are Christopher Monera, Shupikai Mandaza, Munhango Musevenzo and Gift Karupati.

However, the ‘suspended’ officials have dug in, insisting it is in fact Ncube, his deputy Edwin Mushoriwa and a handful party top officials who expelled themselves from the party by “defecting” to the now Nelson Chamisa led opposition.

Said Mandaza, who has declared himself as MDC interim leader, “Categorically and unequivocally, I put it on record that the so-called suspension from MDC (green) by one Farauh Jele, purporting to represent the MDC Disciplinary Committee is thus of no force or effect.

“Jele is not a member of the MDC (green), he is just but a defector from it so he has no business in the affairs of our party.

“Our former President Prof. Welshman Ncube, DP Edwin Mushoriwa, 4 other senior members and all the others who joined the MDCT Party self-expelled themselves from their former party, MDC (green), by operation of the MDC Constitution.”

The MDC officials argue that Ncube led the MDC into the MDC Alliance coalition without National Council approval.

They also argue the MDC Alliance remained a loose coalition whose members could revert to their original formations as demonstrated by other political parties that subscribed to the idea prior to the 2018 elections.

Mandaza continued, “As MDC (green) and in accordance with our constitution, are putting in place measures to effect leadership renewal to replace all those who ditched the party.

“…The available remaining MDC (green) leadership have the mandate to defend and take the party forward including engaging in all Alliance business.

“Finally and without prevarication I re-state that, all those former MDC (green) members who have defected from the party and have taken up positions were Prof W.Ncube is Deputy President HAVE AUTOMATICALLY EXPELLED THEMSELVES FROM MDC (green) BY OPERATION OF THE CONSTITUTION AND SHOULD NOT MASQUARADE AS  MDC MEMBERS.”

READ FULL STATEMENT BELOW:

  1. Categorically and unequivocally I put it on record that the so called suspension from MDC (green) by one Farauh Jele, purpoting to represent the MDC Disciplinary Committee is thus of no force or effect. Jele is not a member of the MDC (green), he is just but a defector from it so he has no business in the affairs of our party.
  2. Our former President Prof. Welshman Ncube, DP Edwin Mushoriwa, 4 other senior members and all the others who joined the MDCT Party self expelled themselves from their former party, MDC (green), by operation of the MDC Constitution.
  3. There is no 2019 National Council resolution to integrate MDC with factions of MDC T and/ PDP.
  4. The last National Council resolution at Mabvazuva empowered the then President W.Ncube to sign an agreement to integrate MDC with a united MDC T (then led by the late Morgan Tsvangirai) and the united PDP then led by Biti.
  5. It also maintained its empowerment of the leadership to continue with the Composite Political Cooperation Agreement, together with the late Morgan Tsvangirai (on behalf of a united MDC T), Tendai Biti (on behalf of PDP) and other Principals of the seven party MDC Alliance.
  6. After the elections, the CPA allowed each individual party to either remain within the 2018 Alliance or revert to standing alone.
  7. The other four parties whose candidates did NOT win any of their allocated Constituencies resolved to revert to standalone, whilst MDC T, MDC, and PDP, who had won some seats resolved to continue with their cooperation.
  8. Fast track the developments, the 2018 Congress held in Gweru turned out to be an MDC T 5th Congress contrary to what we had been told that it was an Alliance Congress.
  9. At this Congress it was particularly made clear that Prof Ncube had been readmitted into MDC T and a handful of his colleagues from MDC (green) decided to join him and started involving themselves in purely MDC T internal fights, but the majority of us decided to stay out and let MDC T resolve their leadership issues and wait to then work with whoever would emerge as the leader.
  10. The generality of MDC members opted to have a specific resolution to authorise integration with factions of MDC T & PDP before committing to further Alliance processes.
  11. Getting back to our party, Prof Ncube and friends unilaterally declared that they would NOT allow a National Council sitting, and had their colleagues make a concerted war path, attacking any and all who were against his and his accomplices’ new Alliance. Anyone who dare gave a different opinion was labelled a renegade, sell-out, puppet of ZANU PF, but members have been discussing these malicious accusations in MDC chat groups in order to find a way forward.
  12. Just some 7 days ago, the same defectors unconstitutionally and hastily set a Disciplinary Committee assembled by former members of MDC (green) and with a primary mission to suspend the leaders in the party MDC who were exercising their constitutional right to defend the MDC party.
  13. Those members who took up positions in the MDC T party in and after 2019 automatically expelled themselves from MDC (green) and as per our constitution the party is presently being led by the most senior member remaining who happens to be me, S.M. Mandaza.
  14. As MDC (green) and in accordance with our constitution, are putting in place measures to effect leadership renewal to replace all those who ditched the party.
  15. We remain members of the MDC Alliance as per the CPA of 2017, and will consider the re-integration with the MDC T party as resolved and guided by our National Council.
  16. No offence was committed by our members who attended sanctioned MDC Alliance committee meetings held so far as they rightly represented the party.

The available remaining MDC (green) leadership have the mandate to defend and take the party forward including engaging in all Alliance business.

Finally and without prevarication I re-state that, all those former MDC (green) members who have defected from the party and have taken up positions were Prof W.Ncube is Deputy President HAVE AUTOMATICALLY EXPELLED THEMSELVES FROM MDC (green) BY OPERATION OF THE CONSTITUTION AND SHOULD NOT MASQUARADE AS  MDC MEMBERS.
